A safe manicure at home is absolutely possible — even if you have never done one before. The secret isn’t expensive tools or talent. It is a calm routine, clean tools and knowing which steps really matter. Here is the order I teach beginners.

1. Start with hygiene

Wash your hands, and clean your tools before and after every manicure. Metal tools can be washed and disinfected; files and buffers are personal and should be replaced when worn. Work at a clean, well-lit table — good light prevents most mistakes.

2. Check your nails and skin first

Never work on a cut, inflamed skin or a nail that looks infected. If something hurts, is swollen or changes colour, skip the manicure and talk to a doctor. Safety always comes before beauty.

3. Shape before anything else

File in one direction with a gentle file, from the side toward the centre. Aggressive back-and-forth filing can weaken the free edge. Choose a shape that suits your lifestyle — shorter, soft shapes are the easiest to maintain.

4. Be gentle with the cuticle

The cuticle protects the nail from infection, so the goal is a neat look, not removal “to the last millimetre”. Soften the area, push back gently and remove only what is clearly loose. Rushing here is the most common reason for redness and discomfort.

5. Prepare the nail plate

A lasting manicure depends on preparation: the nail should be clean, dry and free of oil. Most lifting happens because of a rushed prep, not because of the polish.

6. Apply thin layers — and keep away from the cuticle

Thin, even layers dry and cure better than one thick layer. Leave a tiny gap near the cuticle and side walls: product that floods the skin lifts faster and can irritate it.

7. Remove it safely

Never peel or pick off your coating — it takes layers of the natural nail with it. Remove it gently, following the method intended for your product, and give your nails some care afterwards.

Beautiful at home starts with safe at home. Once the basics become a habit, the result follows.
